A Texas City Girl In A Small New England Town
After five months of hissing, fighting, clawing, and “hating” Finley and Joshua took an extended nap on our bed. They must have gotten tired from all the cat arguments and slept where they dropped in the house.
It rains, again. Joshua decided, he stays in and relaxes on my fluffy blanket on our bed.

Originally, the toy fishies were sent to us by a friend for Joshua. But, Joshua didn’t show any interest in these toys. On the other hand, Benny became very interested when the fish moved around in the water bowl. He always wanted to touch it. Several times, he shook his paw to rid it of the water: “WHY does it have to be WATER???!!!” The fish entertained Benny until he got tired of it.
When Katelynn left, I made her bed. Joshua jumped on the bed immediately. He hasn’t left the bed, yet. And it has been hours. Poor kitty! He misses his Katelynn already.
National Pet Day is April 11, although if youโre a pet owner, you know thereโs not a day that goes by that you donโt celebrate your animal companion! So hug your hedgehog, bond with your bunny, and cut your kitty some catnip! That critter makes you happy.
Another month is gone! It will be one year, and I started the UNDER THE WHITE OAK LEAVES page. Now, 700 blogs later I will begin a new blog year. Btw, tomorrow is also Ozzy’s (our cat) birthday. If you want, send some birthday wishes. I will read them to him tomorrow.

Luis wants to remind yโall, that tonight begins Daylight Saving Time in the US. Heโs excited because we all can enjoy longer daylight in the evenings. โOh boy, oh boy! Am I excited about tomorrow?! Mommy and Daddy are talking about Daylight Saving. I have no clue, what that means. But Mom told Daddy not to forget to change his clocks one hour forward tonight!โ

It began to snow at around 8 o’clock last night. When I looked out of the window at midnight, I could see the accumulation of snow for the last four hours. And it kept coming down heavily. This morning, Kevin used the snow blower for the first time this Winter season. He was so excited.
When I came out of the house, the snow fell off the trees and shrubs this afternoon. It was mild enough for the snow to melt from our house roof and off the greenhouse roof as well. The dogs and Joshua were the only pets going outside. Chewbacca and Ozzy wanted nothing to do with it. When Joshua’s paws were wet enough, he came the dogs back into the house. It’s no fun having snowy paws being a cat.

The year 2022 comes to an end. And the weather became a lot milder over the week. We went from 3โ/-16โ to 59โ/15โ within less than a week. But the rain is supposed to be coming in, tomorrow. So, Chewbacca and I enjoy every minute of sunshine this afternoon.

The few days before Christmas, I was very homesick. No day went by without me wanting to return to Texas. When Katelynn arrived in Denver, Colorado she called Sara on Christmas Eve. Her box arrived on time. And in that box was a Texas Waffle Maker. Awww, that made my day.
The following day, on Christmas morning, Sara wanted waffles before opening the presents. Our pets had to wait a little bit longer for their new toys. Joshua, Chewbacca, Luis, and Benny were patient. On the other hand, Zoey and Ozzy were going crazy. They wanted to play with the wrapping paper so bad.

Since Kevin’s homemade Christmas tree got positive feedback, he installed it in 2008, again. The same year, I decorated a Christmas wreath for our girls.

Tonight, Joshua jumped up on the cat tree. It’s much warmer up there than on the cold den floor. He loves to look at the lights on the tree and play with those bells, I hung on the top post. When Joshua has enough, he lies down and takes a cat nap. ~ “MEOW!”

Benny loves to relax under our Christmas tree. He enjoys slip and slight with the tree skirt around in the front room. And it is even more fun when Ozzy joins him in his mischievous behavior. Benny is such a funny cat.

Last weekend, Kevin and I purchased a Balsam Fir for Christmas. Two weeks prior, I ordered new Christmas ornaments. On Sunday, I decorated the tree. And today finally, I came around to capture several photos. The cats got a hold of the tree skirt. And the dogs think they can use some ornaments as dog toys. It never gets dull with our furbabies. This is one of the reasons, we changed our Christmas baubles from glass to plastic. So far, the pets have kept their paws away from the wooden ornaments. They are all excited about the season.

The Grand Opening of the Watertown Barks & Recreation Dog Park was three weeks ago, I believe. Sara was bugging us to take Zoey to the park, since our Zoey had the zoomies, lately. So much energy has to go somewhere. Today we went to the dog park. And Zoey got so excited, she jumped straight out of the car, after I opened the door. She wasn’t going far. And thank goodness, she had her leash on, which I could grab easily. Once she was in the gated area, we could release her from the leash. Immediately, she made friends with a couple of dogs, who greeted her at the entrance. At the end, she said hello to a dozen of dogs and their owners, before she got tired. And it was time to go home.

Joshua was not happy when I told the pack that they have breakfast and dinner one hour later, from now on until March: “WHAAAT? Do we have to wait until dawn? What is this sorcery? I don’t understand it. But if you say so, I guess it is what it is. Only humans get this crazy idea, of changing their clocks back and forth. And they suppose to be the most intelligent species on this planet. โฆ ” โฆ As we can see, Joshua is on a rant about the end of daylight saving. In the USA, Canada, Greenland, Mexico, and some Caribbean Islands, we will change our clocks one hour BACK, tonight.

My favorite season has begun. And now it is time to get out the Halloween decorations. Since we have pallets from the greenhouse floor, cinder blocks, and soil delivery, Kevin and I wanted to make a pirate ship out of them. Unfortunately, that takes more time and planning than just slapping it together. It also needs to look good. So, we decided we would let the pirate ship go and make an old charred-looking fence out of some of the pallets. Meanwhile, I might get some more ideas about what I could do with the rest of them. The idea of the graveyard came to mind when I pulled my 5-foot skeleton out of the box and I sat it on the tree stump. Kevin still has to run the electric line up the hill and get the lights installed in the graveyard. But this has to wait.

Benny is our latest addition to our family. We adopted him in December 2019. He’s very loving and loves to cuddle with Kevin when he watches TV. But he is also very skittish. Which can be annoying sometimes. Because he also runs from getting brushed. And Benny sheds so much in Summer. Well, we have to take the good with the bad. Benny’s best buddy is Ozzy. They are both about the same age. And they always love to tumble around and get in trouble together. Ozzy seems to be the leader, while Benny follows him. We all celebrated Benny’s Birthday together. The dogs ate already and therefore got a milk bone. Joshua, Chewbacca, and Benny had canned cat food. And Ozzy got a little bit of whipped cream.
Our cats got so spoiled last Christmas. Not only have they gotten toys and catnip. Theyโve also got a new cat tree. After tossing the old tree out in Texas, this was long overdue. Benny and Ozzy climbed and played in the tree as well. However today, the older cats enjoyed the cat tree for themselves. Joshua and Chewbacca loved to groom each other and looked out of the living room window together. While it was cool and windy outside, they did bird watching in a warm and cozy house. โMEOW!โ
Two years ago, Ozzy came out to join Chewbacca in the backyard in Texas. Once he was tired of pouncing to catch bugs, he enjoyed a stroll through the raised bed garden. He had a lot of fun playing โHide and Seekโ with Chewbacca. Ozzy played garden inspector next. The pumpkin leaves make nice umbrellas for shade; the potatoes and tomatoes show another set of nice leaves to hide behind them. And the bird feeder is refilled for the delicious โfoodโ to show up in the garden. Everything is perfect for a young cat to explore the yard. When Ozzy decided to sneak over into the neighborโs yard, the exploration was over. He had to go back inside. Exploration makes a cat very hungry. It was dinner and then nap time for our little โMeatballโ. Ozzy loves meatballs and he looked like one.
Who would have thought that Joshua was such a sneaky little butthead? Back in Texas, when Joshua was still a young cat, he couldn’t keep his eyes on the rotisserie chicken we got from the store. No matter how often we shooed him off the kitchen counter, he still found his way up there. So, what smart people do, we’ve covered the chicken up with the lit. But Josh was smart enough to open the lid and found his way into the container. Nothing is safe from that cat, especially chicken. Now, nine years later, he still finds a way to the covered chicken.
๐๐๐๐๐
Chewbacca and Ozzy have their morning routine: First breakfast and bathroom before they like to go out in the yard and do some bird watching and basking in the morning sun. When the cats see me in the greenhouse, they both pay a visit for some fresh catmint. When it is too warm, Chewbacca and Ozzy come back into the house after two hours. But in Autumn, they all will hang out on the property for most of the day.
We had rain all day, today. And it came down quite a bit. The rain was so needed. The plants and the animals appreciate the fresh water from the sky. Everyone and everything was thirsty; except for Zoey. She decided she could wait to potty. And she rather chose the home office to do her business. I told her, this is not the business we do in that room. Zoey knew she did something wrong. She lowered her head, the ears went down and she trotted off to take a nap in Katelynn’s room. The joy of owning a pet. I definitely could tell, she was embarrassed and sorry.
Ozzy watched a bird for a while this afternoon. The bird must have been resting in our McIntosh apple tree. Since Ozzy climbs only smaller trees, this was the perfect opportunity to jump in the apple tree. First Ozzy tried to chat with the bird, but couldn’t see it. And eventually, it flew away.
Finley was an extraordinary cat. He listened to his name and followed us like a dog. Even, when we said to him to walk into a particular room, he just walked right into it. He was remarkable. In three days, it will be five days since he crossed the rainbow bridge.
We always wonder, where his adventures lead him now. Katelynn has a beautiful story about Finley: “Finley is traveling the Seven Seas in a small sailboat with his newspaper hat, which he uses as his Captain hat. He has so many stories to tell from his adventures in the Caribbean, sailing around South America to get to Australia. Finley loves to hang out in New Zealand in January and February, because of the beautiful Summer weather. He’s stargazing and watches the aurora australis before he gets his boat ready to sail to Japan. There he enjoys sushi and sake with his Siamese friend ้ (Tao), who was born in Taiwan. Finley and Tao always talk about their personal adventures and do some business together, before it is time for Fin to sail to the Bering Sea. By that time, it’s early Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. There, he crosses the Arctic Sea to set sail to Europe. And this is why Finley doesn’t come home. He’s too busy sailing all over the world.” This story always helped her to cope with Finley’s death. I always asked her, where Finley was at that moment. “He must be in Copenhagen in Denmark. The Scandinavians have a lot of fresh fish from the Baltic Sea. You know Finley. He loves fresh fish”, she replied.
Ozzy is not a big fan of these big trees we have in our yard. They are too tall for him. And it seems he gets easily scared of heights. But we also have an apple tree, he recently started to explore. From there he can watch the birds and see what I’m doing inside the greenhouse. After he climbed the tree, he jumped into the tall grass and ended up on the English Yew branches. He was stuck for a moment and Kevin had to help him out of that cluster. Minutes later, he was back in the tree watching chipmunks on the ground. It never gets boring with Ozzy.
Joshua met a new friend named Karmo today. Karmo is an Eastern American Toad. While Karmo leaped in the yard, Joshua kept an eye on that toad. Sara was concerned that Joshua might take Karmo in the mouth. Before it could happen, she just picked up the toad and sat it on Joshua’s back. Karmo leaped up to Joshua’s head, so he could see better. And Joshua was very gentle with Karmo. The cat let the toad sit there for quite some time. Later, we sat Karmo in the greenhouse, where he could catch some bugs.
Joshua is exhausted from watching Kevin and me building the greenhouse. I believe he had a picture of a greenhouse full with fresh catnip, grass and endless chicken meat with mashed potatoes on his mind. Not forgetting the place is full of life mice, shrews, and chipmunks to hunt and catch before he takes a nap on his cat hammock. Keep dreaming, Joshua! ๐
Benjamin is a 15 months old Norwegian Forest cat; weโve adopted from our local shelter today. This is our third pet, we adopted in 2019; heโs our third Maine Coon next to Joshua and Chewbacca; and now we have six pets in the house. By city ordinance we are officially at our maximum limit.
Sara loves to call him Benny. Benny is still a bit shy, and tippy toes around the house, when he’s not hiding in his “safe place”, behind the Christmas tree. Katelynn lured him out with a toy wand. She loves how affectionate Benjamin can be around her. He rubbed his sides against her, and purred at her. Hopefully, he will be more comfortable around us in the next days to come. We gave him the best Christmas present what a pet could think of: a furever home.
Lisa has a beautiful black cat, Trixie, which likes to come to visit our yard. When Benny sees Trixie, his demeanor changes, and he becomes all silly at the front room window. He rubs his head and swirls his body on the cat tree, until he falls off of it. Trixie looks up in the window and probably laughs in her own way. Benny and Trixie need a meet-and-great at some point. She definitely has an admirer.
This week was very busy. First, weโve got our hearts broken, because we had to let Lexi cross the rainbow bridge on Tuesday. Then I found out that our local shelter is over-flown with dogs and cats, and they call this situation โCODE REDโ. Last night, I asked Kevin if we were ready for another dog. The shelter needs relief by adopting those sweet pups and kittens. Kevin agreed, we could take another fur baby in.
This morning, Kevin, Katelynn, Sara, Luis and I went to the shelter as soon as it opened. After a Meet & Greet, we decided we would give Leti, who is now Zoey, a shot. We were told she doesnโt like small dogs and no cats. I heard that before, and was determined that my pets all get along with each other. And sure enough, as soon as Zoey entered our house, Joshua waited patiently at the door (heโs cool with the ladies), Chewbacca watched her from a higher level in the dining area, and Ozzyโs back hair was standing up. But Ozzy wanted to play like a kitten. After a couple of swipes and nips, Ozzy and Zoey got along with each other. They chased one another in the house and played tag. After a nice walk, the dogs are tired and sleep in the front room.
Chewbacca always comes running, when I call him while I work on a garden project. He has to make sure I’m doing everything right. In the meantime, he eats some grass and pukes on the ground. Lovely! When I’m fast enough, I can move him away from the greenhouse flooring, before he leaves me a present on the pavers. The joy of having cats as pets. But I wouldn’t want it any other way. I would rather have him gagging in the yard than in the house. Once he feels better, he makes sure I lay out the bricks in a square.
Say Hello to our new kitten, Ozzy, weโve adopted him today. This morning I woke up, and decided, itโs time for a new cat to complete our house again, After Finley crossed the rainbow bridge, I had a hard time even thinking about adopting a new cat for the last two years. But today was the day. I know Finley looks down from cat heaven, and is very proud that another animal found a furever home in our family.
Ozzy came home with us, and we introduced him to the gang. Luis sniffed out the box, while Ozzy tried to get out of it. Ozzy gave Luis a nose kiss, and they were buds from that moment onward. Chewbacca was next, he sniffed Ozzyโs butt. Itโs funny, because this is usually the dogsโ job. But Chewbacca is a โdogโ in his own way. Then our diva, Joshua, saw Ozzy. OMG, speaking of diva and drama. Joshua hissed and was mad, because he is so jealous. Chewbacca gave him a piece of his mind. And Joshua is mad at everyone, now. We have to give joshโ about 48 hours, and he will be alright. Even Lexi came out from her nap to welcome Ozzy into the family.
Sara played with Ozzy all afternoon. Now, they are both tired and take a nap on the couch. They literally pooped each other out.
Ozzy loves to explore everything in our yard. He watches bumble bees, butterflies, and many other insects emerge from under dew-covered leaves. Birds catch some worms and larva for their offspring on the lawn. Chipmunks perk their little heads from their burrows. And squirrels chase each other around a tree trunk. There is so much to see and prowl on for Ozzy. Once it gets warm throughout the day, he will take a nap in the afternoon. He needs the energy to continue his adventures in the evening, again.
When Ranger passed, we were all very devastated. I shed a lot of tears. And especially Lexi didnโt want to eat. Due to mourning, she ate a couple of milk bones each day. And that was it. After two weeks, Iโve seen enough. We decided to adopt another dog from the shelter, to make our family complete again. Lexi needed a buddy of her kind. The cats did a good job. But it is not the same without another dog. And I needed someone to help me with my grief.
Katelynn, Sara and I went to the shelter. We looked at some dogs, which were playing in a huge fenced area outside. I spoke with a lady, who volunteers at the shelter on a bi-daily basis. After I told her that we just lost a pet, she pointed out โBillโ. The girls and I looked at Bill closer, walked him around in the shelter area, and asked for more information at the front desk. Since he was the โPet of the Weekโ, we got him vetted and for a good adoption price. The papers said, he is a pug/boxer. But when I looked at him closer, there was no way that this dog was a partial pug. I looked up pictures of all kinds of boxer mixes. And we came to the conclusion, he is a pit/boxer mix. We are still not 100 percent sure. Only a DNA test could give more information. But Iโm pretty confident there is a pit in this dog.
When we came home, โBillโ made friends with Joshua immediately. We were very surprised. Joshua is usually the last pet to warm up with a new fur-friend. But that should change a few days later. Joshua is no friend of hustle and bustle and started to enjoy the โsliceโnโdiceโ moments. He does it only when Luis comes way too close to him. Luis learned quickly that a cat has claws. And those claws aren’t pretty. Katelynn didnโt like โBillโ so much, and wanted to name the dog differently. She said, she likes โLuisโ so much better. After some thoughts and how we were going to spell his name, we agreed to โLuisโ.
Luis is such a stinker. He came a long way, since he didnโt know any commands when we first adopted him. Now, he is pretty good at it. Sometimes he is still focused on something. And it is harder to get his attention. But we work on it. He loves to chase and protect us from the โevil rabbitโ. But then again, when Luis stops to take a leak, the rabbit sits next to him and waits patiently until Luis is done with his business. I think they are more friends than enemies. And I believe Luis chases the rabbit to get some workout. Yes, Luis loves daddy so much that he chewed up a pair of Kevinโs jeans, a pair of shorts, one of his dress shoes, and a pair of old tennis shoes. I guess Luis gets bored with all his chewy and squeaky toys sometimes. But on a good note: Since Chewbacca has a friend, who he can play and rough house with, he hasnโt chewed a cord lately.
Luis does a good job to help me with grieving for Ranger. Ranger was an awesome, laid-back dog. Luis, on the other hand, is soooo hyper. But that is exactly what we all needed: a dog with a different character. That way, we wonโt compare them too much. And we accept each pet as an individual. We are very happy; Luis became a member of our family.
(February 2017)
It took Benny a little bit to get comfortable in our new house. By nature, he’s skittish. Therefore, he had a hard time getting adjusted in the beginning. Once Benny found his favorite spot, he began to blossom again. He loves his chair in the family room, where he is elevated and not on the floor, but he has an easy escape route, when Zoey startles him. Oh, and he’s not sharing that chair with anyone. That is HIS chair.
Last November I looked up a cat at a local shelter. She was a sweet Himalayan/Siamese. And she reminded me of โTardar Sauceโ a.k.a. โThe Grumpy Catโ. I felt sad, because she was approximately 8 โ 10 years old. And pets at that age have it much harder to get adopted, because a lot of people have the perception that older animals are stuck in their ways. They might have never heard of: โYou still can teach an old dog new tricks.โ
The girls and I went to the shelter and we were almost ready to adopt the cat, when the lady at the desk told me about the adoption fees. My mouth dropped. I just couldnโt afford spaying fees and doctor fees at the same time. I was a little heartbroken. But I didnโt give up. Because I came with the mind-set that we would adopt a cat that day.
I looked in the cages, and there was a cute male Mainecoon cat sitting there and staring at me. The lady at the shelter let us look at him, to see how he behaves. He was very playful. And he showed himself from his best side. I said: โYep, he might be the better decision!โ Papers were filled out and signed. And we could take the cat home. Since his shelter name was Chewbacca, he kept his name. Hey, Iโm a Star Wars fan since I was eight years old.
Since I didnโt have a cage to transport Chewbacca, we sat him in Katelynnโs lap and told her to hold on to him on his neck for safety reasons. That way he would squirmย and wiggle around, while I was driving. At home I took Chewbacca from Katelynn and I walked with him into the house. Lexi was greeting us. But I forgot, not every cat is used to dogs. Chewbacca jumped towards the storm door and was shocked, because there was a dog in the house. Lexi is very outgoing, and he didnโt like that one bit. After some hissing, I told Lexi to go and called Finley. The cats got along very well, to my surprise. I called Ranger next. Ranger and Chewbacca looked at each other from a distance, and they both seemed to be alright. Ranger is a very laid-back dog. He gave Chewbacca that vibe: itโs all okay. Joshua, the โQueenโ, woke up from his nap and wanted to see what this commotion was all about. โOh hell, no! You brought another cat home??? HISS-HISS-HISS!โ I could tell that Joshua was very jealous of the new cat. Finley must have thought it was very hilarious. He finally wouldnโt get attacked by Joshua as much anymore, and he can relax. I think thatโs why he liked Chewbacca from the moment they crossed each otherโs path.
Joshua was mad for three days. He walked by Chewbacca and hissed as badly as he could. Chewbacca gave him the look: โDude, if I wanted to do it, I could kick your butt!โ That made Joshua even more mad. The same day, Joshua must have gone too far with his bad attitude. Chewbacca gave Joshua a piece of his mind and kicked his butt. Joshua learned a valuable lesson: Donโt mess with someone, you donโt know! All cats started to get along much better. Lexi learned to be less crazy on Chewbacca. And Chewbacca doesnโt feel intimidated by her anymore.
Now, we need to work on not spilling all the water by knocking cups over. And we need to learn to stop chewing on cell phone charging cords. Other than these little โminor setbacksโ, he is an awesome fur-baby.
April 2015
Yesterday evening Kevin, Zoey and I took a little stroll in Echo Lake Park. Because there is a sign to walk in twos or bigger groups due to wildlife activity, I’ve never been on the backside of the lake. The weather was beautiful and we had to stretch our legs from driving back and forth to New York City. The Echo Lake Park Trail is approximately half a mile one way. While on the trail, we saw a turkey hiking up the hill, trying to get away from our curious dog. There are several benches to sit and relax by the water’s edge. On the backside of a boulder there are a couple of artwork drawings. A beaver left its own work close by the lake. Kevin wondered how long it would take a beaver to chew through a tree that size in the photo above. Since it gets warmer, more Canada Geese come back to Echo Lake, again. Zoey really wanted to chase them. But Kevin had a good grip on her, even when she jumped right off the bench. This girl is crazy, when it involves chasing wildlife. After all, she’s part Labrador and part Pity.
Joshua loves to cuddle with all of us. He uses every opportunity to get our attention. When Katelynn was in middle school, he “helped” do homework with her. Joshua explained algebra in the form of chicken patties, frozen fish, and canned cat food. That made learning so much fun. ๐
It was December, and for days I was following a post about a certain cat on the internet, which was stuck in our local shelter. The local Animal Advocates also posted on their page to let the neighborhood know that the shelter is overflown with pets. They also let us know when the dogs and cats were ready for adoption. When I saw this one cat in a photo, it was like โLove at first sightโ. Now, my job was to persuade my husband that Finley needs another playmate other than two middle-aged dogs. โHell! That cat even thinks heโs a dog! The only thing, what makes him not being a dog: Heโs not barking!โ I insisted. It took me two hours to get Kevin to ask: โWhen are we going to the shelter and take a look at that cat?โ
We drove to the shelter; with the hope the cat was still there. When we arrived there, the friendly staff at the shelter showed us the cat room (which brought back memories of when we were looking for Sammy, and adopted Finley years earlier). I looked at the cages and said to Katelynn: โThatโs him! Just look at him. He is even more handsome and adorable than in the photo. After getting introduced and observing the cat, we realized he had sniffles. Katelynn and Sara were a little bit concerned about it. But I ensured, the cat probably has the โshelter-coldโ, what is common in some pets, when they have to stay in a cage for days and wait for a family to adopt them. Katelynn was satisfied with my answer and said: โMom, are we adopting him? Iโve already got a name for him.โ โWhat would his name be, if we take him home?โ I asked. She replied: โIโd name him Joshua!โ A little bit later, Kevin and I agreed to adopt the cat. And Joshua came home with us.
At home the dogs sniffed the new family member. We called Finley (Remember Finley thinks, heโs a dog. Yep, he also listens like a dog. LOL) to introduce him to his new playmate. Finley came around the corner, looked at Joshua. And Joshuaโs reaction was a big hiss. Finley walked away with the look in his face: โWhat the โฆ?! Since when do we allow cats in our house?โ Rangerโs and Lexiโs conversation must have been like this: โAre you going to tell him, or do you want me to tell him?โ โ โNaw, let him figure it out himself!โ
It took about two days, until the cats were not hissing back and forth anymore. They started to tumble and play fight with one another. It took Joshua about a week to get rid of his cold. We wrapped him in a blanket, where he napped for most of the days. But at 3 a.m. the night was over. Because Mr. Joshua was meowing until the whole house was awake. Unfortunately, that went on until we got another cat. I’ll post about that member next week.
(April 2015)
Ozzy worships the Sun as much as he can outdoors. He’s so ready for Spring and Summer weather. The trees begin to bud, bloom and get their leaves. The oak trees need a little bit extra time, while the maples are ready for the warmer weather. Ozzy enjoys hanging out with his feline brothers, prowl and provide us shrews for “dinner”. Cat instinct is at its finest.
In June 2007 our first cat, Sammy, went missing. One day, she slipped out of the house, walked away and never found her way back home again. I printed flyers and taped them to the mail boxes, asked businesses if I could hang a flyer on their pin boards, and went to the local shelter every other day. But there was no sign of Sammy.
One late afternoon, I walked into the shelter again. There was still no lead that Sammy was seen somewhere; she was nowhere to be found. Katelynn looked at all the cats and kittens, said: โMom, I miss Sammy. But can we have another cat?โ I looked at some of the cats. And there was a cute, three-year-old Mainecoon. I had my eye on her, while I called Kevin. Kevin wasnโt so sure if this was a good idea. If Katelynn really wants to get another cat, it would be better to have a younger cat. I was still on the phone with him, when all of a sudden, a small paw reached for me. A little grayish/white kitten meowed, as he wanted to say: โHey, how about me?!โ I rubbed his little paw with my thumb and I fell in love with this little stinker.
After all the paperwork was done, we named him Socks. Socks was actually fairly big for his age. At that time, the shelter estimated him to be four months. But he looked more like a six months old kitten. A couple of days later, I realized I didnโt like โSocksโ, because it was a common name. Kevin and I were thinking about a name, when it popped into my head that we could name him after a player or former player of our local, professional basketball team, the Dallas Mavericks. โDirkโ and โMr. Nowitzkiโ sounded silly. โNashโ was out of the question. I came up with Bradley (Shawn Bradley). And then Kevin had the idea to name him Finley (Michael Finley). I really liked the name โFinleyโ. On that day, Finley got his permanent name.
Now, eight years later he is still an awesome cat. He definitely is a character. Finley will let us know, if and when he wants to be petted by rubbing his side on our calves. He canโt stand it, to be picked up: All claws come out, while spreads his โfingersโ and โtoesโ. But he loves catnip. OMG, does he love it. Finley is also a very good hunter. At this time of the year, we have to be careful, heโs not bringing any baby bunnies and rats into the house. He feels privileged to offer us food. So, we need to tell him to leave his โtrophiesโ outside.

Chewbacca took a little hike with me down to our forest. He loves to watch squirrels, chipmunks and deer. And Chewbacca likes photo shoots.
This week I will introduce my big dog, Ranger, to you. He is a Gollie (Golden Retriever-Collie Mix), very gentle and laid back.
I first met Ranger, when I cleaned a house on a farm in a small town north of Fort Worth. The lady of the house wanted me to help her with the house cleaning bi-weekly. About four weeks after I met Ranger, she introduced me to her fifth dog, Olivia, a cute little Border Collie puppy. Olivia was so sweet. The lady said, her husband found the dog. And they have way too many dogs on the farm. I put a little bit of thought into it, and I made her an offer to adopt Olivia. She then said she couldnโt give me Olivia, because her husband always wanted a Border Collie. And what is the chance that one walks straight to him on a field?
I remembered that she did introduce me to one of her horses two weeks earlier, and Ranger (back then his name was โButchaโ) walked towards me, sat down and put his paw on my leg. I talked to him for a little bit: โHi, how are you! You are so handsome!โ I mentioned to the lady, if he ever becomes a daddy, I want one of the puppies. Heโs so gentle and sweet. She laughed and said: โGood luck with that! Heโs fixed!โ Now, I had to laugh, too. He didnโt get out of my mind, while I was cleaning. And I also kept watching him, playing with the other dogs in the yard.
Back to the day, when the house lady introduced me to Olivia, I asked: โSo, what about Butcha?โ She looked at me with wide open eyes: โAre you sure, your family will be okay with a big dog?โ I called Kevin, had a little conversation with him about Butcha and asked him, if he was okay with me bring home a Golden Retriever-Collie.โ He didnโt agree immediately, and he had his doubt, that this big dog has enough room to run around in our backyard. But he replied: โIโll leave it up to you!โ After I hung up, I said to her: โIโll take Butcha!โ โOkay, Butcha it is! Let me bring him to the groomers, so he can show himself from his best side to your family.โ She told me his life story, which included that he already had several pre-owners in his young life; and he got shot with a pellet gun by her momโs neighbor in Mississippi, before he ended up on her farm here in Texas.
We put Butcha in the back of my SUV. Before I left with him, I told her his name would be โRangerโ. She was still uncertain if this was a good idea. She wanted to make sure everyone in my family was okay with the new member. I assured him as good as I could, that he would finally have a good life and would stay with us. Heโs a very good dog, which needs a good fur-ever home.
I arrived with Ranger at home. My neighbor from across the street saw the new dog and asked: โDoes Kevin know about this big dog?โ I nodded and told him; Kevin was okay with the new pet. I let Ranger in the house, called Lexi, and something crazy happened. Usually, I see dogs sniffing each other’s rear end, maybe growl a couple of times at each other, and take their sweet time to warm up at one another. But Lexi and Ranger both sat down across from each other. And Lexi fell in love at first sight. She tilted her head, looked all cute as she wanted to say: โHi handsome! Iโm Lexi! Whatโs your name?โ Ranger drooled, tried to put himself together and probably stumbled: โHi, my name is โฆ Butcha โฆ hm โฆ Iโm sorry, I canโt remember my new name! โฆ But โฆ you are soooo beautiful!โ โThank you Butcha or what your new name might be. We will figure it out later, I guess! Want to go into the backyard?โ she asked. โSure โฆ sure, why not? I would love to see the backyard!โ he replied. Both walked out to the patio, and Lexi introduced Ranger to her world.
When Kevin and Katelynn came home, I showed them the new dog. Ranger put his paw on Katelynnโs shoulder and touched her nose with his nose. It scared her for a moment, because there was a big dog with big eyes and a big nose all of a sudden. Everything on this dog was much bigger than Lexi. But things turned around quickly. And Katelynn tumbled all over Ranger, while he laid there patiently like a big plush animal. Kevin was still concerned a little bit. He was still not sure if the yard was big enough for Ranger. I said: โHeโll be alright!โ
We adopted Ranger in Spring 2006. Now, Ranger will be ten years old. He is still with us. He and Lexi are still โa coupleโ. And he loves the backyard to this day forward.
(March 2015)
Weโve got Lexi, when she was a three months old puppy. Katelynn (now 11 years old) was 17 months old, and my husband and I wanted a companion for her. We went to the pet store and looked at some dogs. I have to admit, Lexi wasnโt our first choice, because I had an eye on that cute little Jack Russell Terrier puppy. As a matter of fact, all our pets (except Joshua, one of my Mainecoon cats) were not my first choice. But Iโm glad, I considered them as my pets. And I do love them all very much. A young couple was showing a lot of interest in the Jack Russell Terrier puppy, and so I kept looking until a tricolored Sheltie pup looked into my eyes, as she wanted to tell me: โPick me! Pick me! Pick me!โ We observed her in the pin, while we got more information about her from the pet store employee. Katelynn was fascinated with the puppy. She giggled and squeaked, when the pup untied my shoes. Yep, she was the dog I wanted.
At home, Lexi and Katelynn became friends quickly. Katelynn still didnโt want to walk as a 17-months old toddler. But Lexi fixed this in no time. Every time Katelynn sat on the floor, Lexi nipped her ears. Lexi didnโt hurt Katelynn, but it was uncomfortable enough to make Katelynn stand up. Katelynn realized very soon, if she stood up, the puppy couldnโt reach her ears. And Katelynn began to walk. ๐
Over the last decade Lexi became โthe sister with four pawsโ for Katelynn. They did almost everything together. Lexi sat at the door and waited until Katelynn came home from daycare. Katelynn and Lexi played together, they ate ham sandwiches together, took a bath together, and dropped to the floor falling asleep together.
Today, Lexi is over ten years old. Her hair around her nose became white over the years. She gets up and walks a little bit slower. But she is still in good spirits and makes sure everything is under control. She waits for Katelynn to get her homework done, before they go outside and play together. And she still loves it, when Katelynn shares her ham sandwich with the olโ girl.

Our family remembers, when we adopted Ozzy (or he adopted us). He was a three months old kitten. Now, he’s three years old. Ozzy is still a kitten at heart. His favorite part of the day is to play-fight with Benny, our Norwegian Forest Cat, or play tag with Zoey, our Labrador/Pitbull mix. When he wants to play alone, he regularly steals Sara’s hairbands and has a blast with them pushing and kicking them around, until they end up under the refrigerator or under the recliner. When Ozzy wants to watch birds, he usually finds a way on top of our miniature greenhouses to look out the sunroom’s windows. He can be quite a bit mischievous. But we love him so much.
